Walk the talk
-
Walk the talk. Talk to your child about the importance of being physically active and eating right – and make sure you do it too. Find a time to walk with your kids before or after school. This will open up conversations while getting some exercise.
Explore Canada’s new physical activity guides for children and youth. They need to move for 60 minutes a day, but more is better.
-
Participate. Want your kids to be part of a Walking School Bus? Volunteer to chaperone and walk with them to or from school. You and your kids will benefit from the exercise and being outdoors.
-
Play. After dinner, set aside time to play with your kids, dance, play tag or have a game of hide and seek. If you participate, they'll be more motivated to do it too.
-
Walk, walk and walk. Walk to the grocery store, to your friend's house, to work. You'll send a positive message to your kids and they’ll most likely want to do it too.
-
Join a class. Always wanted to take a yoga or pilates class? Why not sign up? Show your kids what you learned and practice with them. They’ll see that you’re taking your health seriously and that they should do the same.
-
Create your own space. Find a quiet corner of the house to do some exercise. Find some time to go to your exercise corner and do some stretches, weight lifting and core toning exercises. Invite your kids to come along.
-
The group effect. Are you ready to take the first step towards being active? There's nothing like having a support group to achieve your goals. If you or your kids need to start a more rigorous program, do it in a group. It really motivates everybody and makes it easier to join forces.
