Volunteer so kids in your community can be active
-
Become a coach. Want your kids to play their favourite sport or activity, but there’s no leader to organize and coach? Volunteer a few hours a week to allow your kids and others in your community to participate. Coach as part of an existing youth organization or invite kids to come to informal "practices" and organize games on the spot.
Get tips for coaches from Canadian Sport for Life.
-
Help as an assistant coach or become a team manager. Not comfortable coaching? Why not become an assistant coach or team manager? The responsibility and time commitment are less and both positions are necessary for the sport or activity to run smoothly.
-
Organize after school and weekend active play dates. Invite friends over to play outdoors. Find activities that will make them run, walk, jump and play.
Learn how to encourage different types of play.
-
Start small. If you’re organizing informal games, start with a small group of kids and make sure they have a lot of fun! The goal is not to turn your young player into a professional, but to give him or her the tools for success and make the game more enjoyable for everyone.
- Work with other parents. Team up with other parents in your neighbourhood/community to organize a weekly football, baseball or soccer game.
-
Build a backyard rink. This winter, why not build a backyard rink and organize pick up hockey games or informal skating for kids in your neighbourhood?
- Make it safe.. Work with your local recreation department to make sure there’s lighting at night and that the facilities are safe.
